Mosin Nagant 91/30_AIM Surplus - Check Headspacing before firing?

I wonder if anyone checked the headspacing before firing the 91/30 from AIM.  Any chance AIM Surplus (or the Importer) already checked the headspacing on each Mosin before selling them?If not, do the...

Re: Mosin Nagant 91/30_AIM Surplus - Check Headspacing before firing?

I do not believe AIM checks the head space. I have bought an Enfield with bad head spacing from AIM, so I don't think they check. The accessories that come with a MN do not include a head space gauge....

If the bolt matches the receiver, then it's probably good to go. I've owned and shot many 91's & 91/30's over the years and have never had an issue with headspace.

High probability that if the numbers on the bolt match the numbers on the barrel, things will be fine but paying a smith to check it as a good option. Option too is tying the rifle securely to a spare...

Re: Mosin Nagant 91/30_AIM Surplus - Check Headspacing before firing?

This is no guarantee, but let's use a little common sense. These 91/30's that the dealers have are all fresh arsenal reworks. I wouldn't expect a headspace problem, as opposed to some other rifles...

I have never ran across a Russian milsurp with bad head space. Most of the time if the bolt matches the weapon, you are good to go.Got a Carcano once with bad head space. So I parted it out.I tend to do...

I have had two Mosins in more years than I want to remember with bad headspacing. I have a go and no go guage set that I bought from Brownells many years ago and check everything I buy for that,...

Zeebill has included some very important tips - the bounce test, extractor, etc. Very good things to check! Thanks Bill.

You can get a complete set of Okie Gages for 7.62x54r for pretty cheap.

Headspace gauges. I bought the Yankee Engineering Field gauge ("field reject") for my MNs and it already had the extractor-cut machined into it. This "headspace" issue can get to be a very contentious...

For what it's worth, I've got a 91/30 from AIM.  Took it out of the box, checked the headspace with a field gauge from Okie, it passed, took it to the range and it worked just fine. No issues at all....

Yankee and probably Okie too make nice sets of head space guages but they are coin type and I find in my old age I can lose coin type things very easily. That is the only reason I use the bigger ones,...

I have and use the Yankee Eng'r. coin type "field" gage. It is the correct one to use on an assembled or used weapon. "Go" and "No-Go" gages are for installing barrels. Be sure to get a "Milspec"...
